Suicide Intervention Officer


The role of a Suicide intervention officer (SIO) is to be a listener on SOSAD’s 24 hour helpline.

Listening to the caller, provide support, care and where needed offer practical advice on services available to them.

Dealing with low and high-risk suicidal clients presenting with issues of self-harm, suicidal ideation, alcoholism, depression, and unresolved past trauma

Our helpline is operated from our office between the hours of 10am – 6pm Monday to Friday, an SIO will have the help line diverted to their mobile one night a week during the offices closing hours (6pm – 10am)

Contacting the office with any referrals from calls during the night to be followed up by daytime staff.  

Maintaining accurate and confidential records in line with SOSAD policy and regulations.

Requirements

  • Previous experience working with people who are suicidal/depressed will be an advantage
  • Experience working on a helpline preferable
  • Safetalk / ASIST training an advantage. Training Provided. 
  • Commitment to one night per week
  • Ability to work positively with clientele
  • Effective communication and organisational skills
  • Respect for patient confidentiality
  • To maintain professional and personal boundaries. Must have a caring, empathetic and understanding nature. 

Training

Successful candidates will receive full training for this role in active listening, Crisis intervention skills and the software used.
