SOSAD Ireland offers professional, confidential counselling to anyone aged 16 and over. You do not need a GP referral to access our services—just reach out to your local SOSAD office or call our 24-hour helpline to begin the process.
Counselling Services
Our counselling service is available to anyone experiencing mental health challenges—whether you’re feeling stressed, anxious, overwhelmed, struggling with grief or loss, or experiencing suicidal thoughts. No issue is too big or too small. Whatever you’re facing, we’re here to listen and support you. All we ask is that you take the first step and reach out.

Getting Started: The Intake Process
Before being matched with a counsellor, you’ll attend an intake meeting with one of SOSAD’s trained support workers. This meeting can take place over the phone or in person at your local SOSAD office, depending on your preference.
During this conversation, the support worker will provide a safe, welcoming space to talk about what you’ve been experiencing. Based on this discussion, you’ll be paired with a counsellor who best suits your needs.
While You Wait
While waiting to begin counselling, you’ll receive weekly check-in calls from our support team. These calls are designed to ensure you feel supported, answer any questions you may have, and keep you updated on your counselling schedule. You are welcome to opt out of these calls at any time.
Our Counselling Sessions
Counselling sessions are held once per week, with each session lasting approximately 50 minutes. You can choose to attend sessions in person at your local SOSAD office, online, or by phone—whatever feels most comfortable for you.
We offer an initial block of 6 or 12 counselling sessions, depending on need. After this period, your counsellor will evaluate your progress and discuss whether continued sessions would be beneficial. If so, your counselling contract can be extended to ensure you receive the ongoing support you need.
