At SOSAD Ireland, we believe in the power of support, understanding, and empathy to help individuals through difficult times. If you are a qualified counsellor or psychotherapist, or a student working towards your qualification or accreditation (third year and above), we would love to hear from you. We are always looking for passionate, committed volunteers to join our team and support the vital work we do across the country.
Students – Contact Us About Placement Hours
As a volunteer counsellor, you will play an essential role in delivering mental health services to those who need them most. SOSAD Ireland operates across six locations and we are seeking face to face, as well as remote, counsellors for each of these offices. Whether you are experienced or still working towards your professional qualifications, you can make a real difference in the lives of individuals who turn to us for help.
The Role
As a volunteer counsellor, you will have the opportunity to provide one-to-one support to clients who are dealing with a wide range of mental health issues (within the boundaries of your competence, training and experience). The role involves offering a safe, confidential space for clients to explore their feelings, thoughts, and experiences while helping them navigate their personal challenges.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing One-to-One Counselling: Conducting individual sessions with clients, offering support for issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, and more.
- Adhering to Policies and Procedures: Following SOSAD’s established guidelines to ensure the highest standards of care and professionalism are maintained.
- Commitment to at least two hours per week: We ask that you commit to at least two hours each week, helping us to provide consistent support for those in need.
Requirements
To ensure the highest level of care for our clients, we have a few requirements for all potential volunteer counsellors. These include:
- The Basics: Firstly, you must be a member of an accrediting body, have insurance and hold in-date Children First certification.
- Qualification or Training in Counselling/ Psychotherapy: You must either be a fully qualified counsellor or psychotherapist or currently a student at a recognised institution. We value continuous learning and are committed to supporting those in training as they progress toward full accreditation.
- Empathetic and Friendly Demeanour: A key quality we seek is an ability to build a strong therapeutic bond with clients, through a compassionate and approachable attitude.
- Ethical Practice: You must have a strong understanding of ethical practice and adherence to the IACP’s ethical guidelines.
- Strong Communication and Organisational Skills: You should be able to effectively communicate with clients, colleagues, and management while also managing your time and caseload efficiently.
- Garda Vetting: All volunteers are required to undergo Garda vetting as part of our commitment to creating a safe environment for clients.
- Two References: We request two professional references to support your application, ensuring that you have the experience and integrity to fulfil this important role.
